Criminal Department
As the whole of the criminal law becomes increasingly complex with the passing of more and more legislation, it is often essential to engage a lawyer to assist you through the maze and to achieve the most acceptable outcome to you. Making the right choice of lawyer is crucial. At HPJV we offer you our expertise and commitment in trying to find an acceptable solution to your problem.
Since the formation of Hodson Parsons in the early 1980s, the provision of legal services in the area of criminal law has been a cornerstone of the firm's practise. The firm's position as one of the largest and leading local suppliers of criminal legal aid work was further consolidated in following a merger with Derek James & Vaux solicitors. We continue to provide unrivalled service in the Gwent and South Wales area and have a large pool of expertise sufficient to meet the needs of our clients whether legally aided or private paying. We are recognised by the Legal Services Commission as a firm which meets the exacting quality standards which qualify us to carry out legal aid work.
We are able to provide the following range of services:
- If you are arrested, we are able to provide free advice and assistance at the police station 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Just ask for us at the police station or contact one of our out of office hours numbers.
- If you are charged or summoned by the police with any offence we will be able to represent you at court without charge if eligible for legal aid or, otherwise, at competitive rates. Remember, that eligibility for legal aid depends on the nature of the case rather than how much you earn or how much you have saved.
- If you or your organisation is being prosecuted by a local authority or government agency for regulatory offences (such as breaches of food hygiene regulations, planning law offences, trades description offences, vehicle overloading) we have the expertise to help you at competitive rates and, if you are an individual, you may be eligible for free legal aid.
- If you or your organisation is prosecuted for offences which lead to proceedings in the Crown Court, we are able to assist you in the preparation of your case and to instruct and work with specialised barristers who will represent you in the proceedings. If you are an individual you may be eligible for legal aid.
- If you are currently serving a prison sentence, we can help you by advising you as to your rights as a prisoner, making representations on your behalf to the prison authorities, and, where appropriate, representing you in disciplinary proceedings before an adjudicator.
